German Red Mulled Wine (Glühwein)

german spiced mulled wine recipe

Now is the perfect time for warming hot spiced wine, traditionally called Glühwein. Red mulled wine with spices is a beloved classic during the holiday season. It is associated with cozy winter gatherings and festive celebrations, a must-drink at Christmas markets, and winter festivals.

You don’t have to settle for pre-made mulled wine from the supermarket filled with additives; it’s easy to make your own at home with just a few simple ingredients. This drink is only suitable for adults!

What wines to choose?

For your mulled wine base, it’s best to pick a red wine that is low in acidity and tannins. Great American options include Merlot or Pinot Noir, which are readily available at most liquor stores.

With a splash of “Schnapps”, it transforms into a warming punch that packs more of a kick than regular mulled wine. If you’re looking to elevate the drink, add a splash of dark rum, which pairs beautifully and enhances the cozy flavor profile.

Enhance it

You can customize the flavor of your mulled wine with the following variations that we Germans love:

  • Add 3 ounces (about 80 ml) of orange juice, cherry juice, or black currant juice for a fruity kick that brightens the drink.
  • Fresh orange slices not only look great in the mug but also add a zesty flavor. Cut in a few slices and let them steep for a vibrant finish.
  • Enhance the aroma by adding 1 vanilla bean, slitting it lightly before adding.
  • Toss in 3 dried plums for a touch of natural sweetness that complements the spices.
  • Add either white or dark rum, depending on your preference.
Dark rum offers a richer, more aromatic flavor, while white rum is lighter and more neutral.
  • For a unique twist, try adding Amaretto or herbal liqueurs like Jägermeister.

Note: The stronger the added spirit, the stronger the mulled wine will be. From an alcohol content of around 7%, it can easily exceed 15%, making it a perfect drink for holiday parties.

  • 2 pieces Cinnamon sticks whole
  • 1 pinch Nutmeg grated
  • cups Rum optional
  • 4 slices Orange

  • Now add the orange slices.

  • Rinse the glasses with hot water before serving. Strain the finished mulled wine into the glasses. If desired, add a splash of rum afterward.

Notes

Do not bring the wine to a boil; it should only be heated. Otherwise, the alcohol will evaporate too much. Add rum, amaretto, or other spirits only at the end into the mugs.
